While people in the D.C. area are used to seeing firefighters show up to burning buildings wearing top-of-the-line gear that’s National Fire Protection Association compliant, other parts of the world aren’t so lucky.

A donation from the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department will give firefighters in Liberia a little more protection, and a little more confidence, the next time a fire breaks out.

Plant-based cookie shop MidnighTreats brings a sweet new option to College Park

Plant-based cookie shop MidnighTreats opened a new College Park location on Feb. 8, according to the store’s owner Jordan Rutland.

The shop on College Avenue occupies the building which previously housed Insomnia Cookies and is the company’s first store in Maryland. The Virginia-based chain operates locations in Reston, Arlington and Alexandria.

Call Your Mother bagel chain rolls into Prince George's County with a mobile shop

Bagel chain Call Your Mother has rolled into Prince George's County, literally.

The "Jew-ish" deli has moved one of its mobile units from Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda to the Whole Foods Market-anchored The Station at Riverdale Park, marking its first location in Prince George's. The pink-and-teal Lil' Deli, made by Movable Roots, measures 22 feet by 8 feet, 6 inches, and will be parked at The Station for an undetermined amount of time — it had been in Bethesda for more than four years.

Maryland’s Purple Line providing grants to businesses, communities near rail corridor

The 16-mile Purple Line that’s still under construction in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties likely won’t be operational for another two-and-a-half years. But the company building the rail line, Purple Line Partners, and the Maryland Department of Transportation are trying to soften the blow for businesses, cities and community groups along the route.

Captain D's​ To Open 5 Casual Seafood Eateries In Prince George's Co

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Captain D's, the nation's leading fast-casual seafood restaurant based out of Tennessee, announced Wednesday that it will develop five restaurants in Prince George's County in the next seven years.

The eateries will be the first Maryland locations for the growing chain. Captain D's serves a wide variety of seafood that includes freshly prepared entrees and the company's signature batter dipped fish. The restaurants also offer grilled items such as shrimp, tilapia and salmon, as well as hushpuppies, desserts and freshly brewed, Southern-style sweet tea, a Captain D's favorite.

Maryland added over 38,000 total jobs in 2024, new data shows

BALTIMORE, MD (January 28, 2024) – Maryland added 38,400 jobs in 2024 (27,300 in the private sector) and employment grew at a 1.4 percent growth rate, according to preliminary end-of-year employment estimates released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This data, based on surveys of employers, also notes that Maryland’s total employment grew by 200 jobs in December. 

In December, Maryland’s labor force participation rate remained constant at 65.6 percent, well above the national average of 62.5 percent. Maryland’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.1 percent as well last month. Maryland’s unemployment rate remains one of the lowest in the nation and well below the national rate of 4.1 percent.

Maryland public airports generate $1.4 billion

Maryland’s nearly three dozen public-use airports generated $1.4 billion in economic activity last year, according to a recent report from the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA).

The 33 airports examined in the report stretch from the Garrett County Airport in Western Maryland to the Ocean City Municipal Airport in Worcester County, and from the Claremont Airport in Cecil County to the Maryland Airport in Charles County. The study did not include BWI Airport, which compiles its own statewide economic impact report.

Developer Buys Prince George’s County Site Planned For 245 Units

The opening of Maryland’s Purple Line has been delayed for years, but it is still spurring interest from developers to build around its stations.

Minneapolis-based Dominium Apartments last week closed on its acquisition of 7011 Chesapeake Road in Hyattsville for $4M. It plans to build 245 affordable rental units restricted to those who earn up to 60% of the area median income.

Dominium has had the site under contract for more than a year, and it received preliminary plan approval from Prince George’s County in June. The project, branded as The Flats at Glenridge Station, is the company’s first in the D.C. market.

Compass Coffee opens first Maryland shop in College Park

Compass Coffee has opened a new shop by the University of Maryland campus, its first in the state as the District-based chain expands its footprint across Greater Washington.

The new spot, which opened this weekend, is a roughly 1,400-square-foot space at the base of the Hub College Park, a 477-unit student housing development that delivered in 2023.  The space was previously operated as a student-run coffee shop, New Here Coffee, at 4210 Knox Road.
