Public officials across the country are getting more creative in their strategies to rejuvenate their downtowns five years after the pandemic decimated foot traffic.

In San Francisco, leaders and landlords are offering small businesses free rent on retail space. Stakeholders in Birmingham, Alabama, are repositioning vacant offices into new storefronts and restaurants. In Denver, bodegas and banks are replacing offices downtown as city stakeholders hope to transition the retail base from focusing on workers to catering to residents.

City and economic development officials around the United States are looking to their ground floors as a way to fill gaps left behind by the absence of commuting workers.

PGCEDC proudly participated in the 2025 SelectUSA Investment Summit, the premier event for promoting foreign direct investment in the United States. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the Exhibition Hall with hundreds of economic development organizations, service providers, and industry experts. PGCEDC Hosts Select USA Reception in ISBI

On Thursday, May 8th, ISBI hosted a group of international businesses that arrived in the region for the SelectUSA Investment Summit. PGCEDC Business DevelopmentTeam members Alicia Moran and Martin Ezemma led the tour, during which the businesses learned about the resources available within ISBI.

Prince George’s County Chair Edward P. Burroughs III, Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha, and Council Member Wala Blegay explained why the County is the best place for expanding their businesses.

The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the U.S. government's premier event for promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States. It's a high-profile event that brings together investors, companies, economic developmentorganizations, and industry experts to facilitate business deals. CITYBIZ Sports Complex Anchors $1.3 Billion South Lake Mixed-Use Development

In an innovative departure from traditional mixed-use developments, a massive new project in Bowie, Maryland is demonstrating how sports tourism can drive retail and residential growth. South Lake, spanning 381 acres at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Maryland Route 214, represents one of the largest and most ambitious developments in the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis corridor.

The $1.3 billion project, 90% complete in its first phase, integrates 1,600 residential units and 600,000 square feet of retail space with Liberty Sports Park, a tournament-grade athletic complex that attracted over 344,000 visitors in its first year. Kenwood Management Executes 10,172 SF Lease Extension with Corvias in Largo, Maryland

Kenwood Management Company announced today that, through its affiliate, Lottsford of Landover, LLC, has executed a 4 ½ year lease extension with Corvias and Clean Water Partners at Lottsford Business Center, 9475 Lottsford Road, Largo, Maryland.

Corvias has been a tenant in the building since 2018. Corvias assists the government of Prince George’s County, Maryland, in improving its stormwater infrastructure.

Three |E 60 Prince George’s Municipalities Form Coalition With Eye To Securing Share Of Blue Line Development

They share a Metro line, they share a ZIP code and they share a dream of revitalized older communities. And, come Saturday, the Prince George’s County towns of Capitol Heights and Fairmount Heights and the city of Seat Pleasant will have something else in common.

They will all be members of the new 20743 Coalition.

The mayors of those three inside-the-Beltway municipalities will meet Saturday to launch the coalition, named for the ZIP code they have in common. Their goal is to ensure that their often-overlooked communities share in the Blue Line corridor redevelopment projects that are scheduled in coming years as part of an effort to redevelop central Prince George’s County.

WTOP Why Bowie is one of America’s hottest housing markets

Redfin’s annual list of hottest housing markets ranks Bowie, Maryland, No. 10, and the Prince George’s County community earns the top 10 spot for several reasons.

Bowie has two things in common with all the communities on Redfin’s hottest markets list.

“In general, the most appealing neighborhoods are those that offer both access to cities and some of that small-town suburban charm,” said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin.

Washington Business Journal SBA rolls out new grant program focused on American manufacturing

The Small Business Administration is rolling out a new grant program to help spur American manufacturing efforts.

The $1.1 million grant program, part of the SBA’s Made in America Manufacturing Initiative, will award up to three organizations funding to help provide training and technical assistance to support small manufacturers within SBA’s Empower to Grow Program. That could include free business courses, hands-on training or one-on-one consulting to support their growth, operations, hiring and regulatory compliance.

Governor Wes Moore today announced the latest round of Maryland Alcohol Manufacturing Promotion Fund and Winery and Vineyard Economic Development Grant Programawards, administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce’s Office of Tourism Development. In total, 52 applicants received more than $2 million in funding for expansions, promotions, and agricultural projects to further develop Maryland’s craft beverage industry.

“Maryland’s breweries, wineries and distilleries play a vital role in our state's economic growth,” said Gov. Moore. “These grants will uplift our local businesses, while also fostering new investment opportunities across Maryland.
