Purple Line connecting Montgomery, Prince George’s counties another step closer to reality

Prince George’s County is one step closer to gaining a major transportation and economic development asset as the long-awaited Purple Line light rail project reached another significant construction milestone this month.

As reported by WTOP, the final piece of track for the Purple Line was installed during a ceremony attended by local, state, and federal leaders, marking a major step forward for the 16-mile transit system connecting Prince George’s County and Montgomery County.

The Purple Line, expected to open in late 2027, will connect communities from Bethesda to New Carrollton while linking riders to multiple Metro lines, MARC commuter rail lines, and Amtrak services. The project is designed to improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen access to jobs, education, and commercial centers throughout the Washington metropolitan region.

For Prince George’s County, the project represents more than transportation infrastructure. It reflects long-term economic investment tied to business growth, transit-oriented development, workforce accessibility, and regional competitiveness.

The Purple Line corridor is expected to create expanded opportunities for retail, housing, hospitality, office development, and small business growth near stations located throughout Prince George’s County communities including New Carrollton, College Park, Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, Langley Park, and surrounding areas.

“In Maryland, our people have one very simple question for all of their elected officials: are you going to do what you say you’re going to do?” Maryland Governor Wes Moore said during the milestone event. “Today, we are delivering.”

Governor Moore also emphasized the broader economic impact of the project, noting that the Purple Line has already put more than 2,000 people to work while strengthening Maryland’s long-term economic competitiveness.

Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy also highlighted the project’s long-term community and economic benefits.

“We are excited that the Purple Line is almost ready,” Braveboy said. “Investing in the Purple Line has always been about investing in our economy and community by connecting the places people live, work, learn — and enjoy life.”

As transit-oriented development continues expanding nationwide, infrastructure projects like the Purple Line are increasingly viewed as catalysts for economic growth, commercial investment, workforce mobility, and sustainable development. Improved transportation connectivity can help businesses attract talent, increase customer accessibility, and support long-term investment across surrounding commercial corridors.

The project also continues generating opportunities for construction firms, suppliers, engineering companies, and small businesses connected to the transportation and infrastructure sectors. According to Maryland officials, nearly $2.6 million in grants has already been awarded to businesses impacted by Purple Line construction through the state’s Purple Line Small Business Grant program.

For Prince George’s County businesses, the Purple Line represents a long-term investment in regional connectivity and economic mobility that could help strengthen commercial activity, increase development opportunities, and support continued growth throughout the County’s innovation and transportation corridors.

Businesses interested in exploring development, expansion, or investment opportunities within Prince George’s County are encouraged to connect with PGCEDC’s Business Development Team.
