A proposed Sphere entertainment venue at National Harbor could position Prince George’s County as one of the nation’s premier destinations for immersive entertainment, tourism, and large-scale economic activity.
As reported by CBS News Baltimore, Maryland lawmakers recently approved legislation that adjusts tax financing provisions to support the development of a Sphere Entertainment venue in Prince George’s County. The proposed 6,000-seat venue would become the second Sphere location in the United States and the first to utilize a smaller-scale venue model.
The project, proposed through a partnership involving Sphere Entertainment, the State of Maryland, Prince George’s County, and Peterson Companies, represents one of the most significant entertainment and tourism development opportunities in the County’s recent history. According to project projections, the venue could generate more than $1 billion annually in economic impact while supporting approximately 2,500 construction jobs and nearly 4,750 permanent operational jobs once completed.
Located just minutes from Washington, D.C., National Harbor already attracts more than 15 million visitors annually through its hospitality, dining, gaming, retail, and convention offerings. County and state leaders believe the addition of a Sphere venue could significantly elevate the region’s national and international visibility while creating new opportunities for local businesses across multiple industries.
The proposed venue would feature cutting-edge immersive entertainment technology, including a 16K-by-16K LED interior display, immersive sound systems, haptic seating, 4D effects, and a programmable exterior LED display capable of showcasing artistic and branded content. The venue is expected to host concerts, immersive productions, branded experiences, and large-scale events year-round.
Beyond entertainment, the project reflects a broader shift in how regions compete for economic growth through destination-driven development. Large-scale experiential venues increasingly serve as catalysts for surrounding business activity, driving increased hotel occupancy, restaurant traffic, retail spending, transportation demand, and long-term tourism investment.
For Prince George’s County-based businesses, the project could create expanded opportunities in hospitality, event services, technology, construction, marketing, logistics, creative industries, and small business partnerships tied to visitor activity and entertainment spending.
In a joint statement highlighted in reporting from CBS Baltimore, state and county leaders described the project as a transformational investment designed to strengthen Maryland’s competitiveness within the tourism and entertainment sectors.
“This will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore said in the announcement surrounding the proposal.
Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy also described the proposal as a “world-class win” for the County and a reflection of the region’s growing ability to attract nationally significant investment projects.
As Prince George’s County continues advancing initiatives focused on business attraction, tourism growth, innovation, and destination development, projects like the proposed Sphere venue demonstrate the County’s growing role as a competitive hub for entertainment, technology, and economic opportunity within the DMV region.
