National Harbor’s Juneteenth Celebration Highlights Economic Power of Black-Owned Businesses

Prince George’s County’s National Harbor will once again serve as a hub for culture, commerce, and community as it hosts its Fifth Annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 19, reinforcing the growing economic impact of Black-owned businesses across the region.

The event, “Celebrating Culture. Elevating Community,” brings together residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs for a full day of programming that goes beyond cultural recognition—positioning Juneteenth as a driver of local business visibility, revenue generation, and community-based economic growth.

A Platform for Small Business Growth

At the center of the celebration is a Black-owned marketplace featuring more than 30 vendors, offering products ranging from apparel and accessories to skincare and food. For small businesses, events like this provide critical opportunities to:

  • Reach new customers and expand brand awareness

  • Generate direct sales in a high-traffic destination

  • Build relationships that lead to long-term growth

With National Harbor already home to 14 Black-owned businesses, the event further strengthens the area’s role as a destination for diverse entrepreneurship and inclusive economic activity.

Driving Foot Traffic and Local Spending

Large-scale cultural events continue to play a key role in Prince George’s County’s economic development strategy by attracting visitors and increasing spending across multiple sectors.

Attendees drawn to the Juneteenth celebration contribute to:

  • Restaurant and retail activity throughout National Harbor

  • Increased visibility for local businesses and experiences

  • Broader tourism engagement within the County

This type of activation demonstrates how cultural programming can translate into measurable economic impact, particularly for small and minority-owned businesses.

Strengthening the County’s Creative and Cultural Economy

In addition to the marketplace, the celebration features live performances on the Rhythm & Roots Stage, presented by MGM National Harbor, with headlining acts including Black Alley and Too Much Talent Band, and hosted by Aladdin.

This integration of music, arts, and education—including a curated Juneteenth history timeline—highlights the County’s growing creative economy, where cultural expression and economic opportunity intersect.

A Model for Inclusive Economic Development

Events like National Harbor’s Juneteenth celebration reflect a broader shift toward intentional, inclusive economic development, where cultural heritage is leveraged as both a community asset and an economic driver.

By creating space for Black-owned businesses to scale visibility and connect with new audiences, Prince George’s County continues to support:

  • Entrepreneurial growth

  • Equitable access to economic opportunities

  • Stronger local business ecosystems

Outlook for Local Businesses

For businesses across Prince George’s County, the Juneteenth celebration represents more than a single-day event—it signals sustained momentum around community-centered commerce and destination-driven growth.

As cultural events continue to draw regional audiences, businesses that align with experiential, community-focused, and culturally relevant offerings are well-positioned to benefit from increased demand and expanded market reach.
