Executive Constantine Make “Coffee Bet”

Largo, MD –  Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III challenged County Executive Dow Constantine of King County, WA (the County that the City of Seattle is located within) to a friendly wager over the upcoming Washington Redskins/Seattle Seahawks NFL playoff game. Known as the "coffee bet," the County Executives are putting up a gift basket of coffee from their respective local companies -  Seattle's Best Starbucks, and an assortment of other locally roasted coffees from Seattle, WA and Prince George's own 8 O'Clock Bean Coffee from Landover, MD.

Additionally, County Executives Baker and Constantine are using this opportunity to promote the importance of mentoring since January is "National Mentoring Month" and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King National Day of Service on January 21. The County Executives agreed to wear the winning team's jersey during their respective mentoring and volunteering events. A link to the video chat between the County Executives can be seen here.

"This is a very exciting time for Prince George's County and hosting an NFL playoff game for the first time since 1999 means a great deal to this region and the team's legion of fans," said Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III.  "The Redskins' performance this season has been extremely inspirational to me and so many others. Their achievements are a great example of what can happen when you work hard, remain focused and believe in yourself. These are the types of lessons we need to teach our young people and mentoring is one way to ensure that children learn these life lessons. I am confident that the Redskins will be victorious this Sunday and I want to thank King County Executive Constantine for joining me in this wager. This is a fun way to show pride in our teams, highlight our local businesses and promote the importance of mentoring."

"I am pleased to make this friendly wager with Prince George's County Executive Baker to highlight King County's world-famous coffee, our commitment to community service, and our beloved Seattle Seahawks," said King County Executive Dow Constantine. "Go Hawks!"

The Washington Redskins (10-6) will host the Seattle Seahawks (11-5) at FedEx Field on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox.

By winning the NFC East Division Title with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in a prime time nationally broadcast game, the Redskins earned the right to host this playoff game. With an additional game being played at FedEx Field, Prince George's County stands to earn over $500,000 additional revenues in direct amusement and admissions taxes as well as thousands more in indirect revenue from retail, hotel, and other economic opportunity spurred by the Redskins success on the field.
